25th Sunday in Ordinary time Year I 2014 EGAGING COMPASSION

25th Sunday in Ordinary Time  year I 2014
Theme: Engaging Compassion
21st  September 2014
I Reading Is 55:6-9 God forgives
II Reading Phil 1:20-24a, 27 Paul’s life is centered on Christ.
Gospel 20:1-16a engaged to be true serve.
When I realize I am God’s creature, my life becomes a joyful engagement to my duty.
I will do the work I am involved in joyfully.
My interaction with others will be sensitive.
The ‘Our Father’, I pray, is a symbol of engaging compassion in action.
Duetro-Isaiah is a symbol of God’s compassionate love in action.
His engagement with the creation is pictured in a vivid fashion.
St. Paul in the letter to the Philippians explains the reason for his life which is centered around Jesus his Master.
The Gospel of this Sunday is oft heard story of a generous Landlord.
Here in this parable, Jesus compares to the world and its inhabitants to a vineyard and employment there at various period of time..
I see people live here in various times.
They are exposed to the various types of people.
But once I  realize that am special called to the grace of heaven.
Called specially to be light.
Called specially to be the truth.
Called specially to be the way.
Called specially to be the joy.
Called specially to be the compassion.
The whole of today’s liturgy empowers me to bring forth the love of God in action.
I have been entrusted with so many good things of this world.
The nature God has given me to empower me to be his.
He has placed me on the top of this nature to be able to enjoy the good things of this life.
But often my greed makes me to misuse the goodness and destroy nature.
Today when Jesus speaks through the parable asking me to work there.
I see around me how people go from one country to the other in search of better prospect.
Often they loose their born culture, language, and other social activities.
They have to adjust and live in different situation.
This brings lots of challenges that one has to face.
In the whole liturgy God through Jesus is instructing us to be ready and willing to be taught by his goodness.
This goodness is always accompanying us to be his.
His compassion will enfold us and allow us to be relevant to the needs of the time.
Let us enjoy the God given opportunity and live our lives doing our bit to bring about the salvation of the Lord for all.
Wishing all of you a wonderful Sunday
Yours ever in the divine word,

Passion Sunday 2014
13 -4-2014
Theme: Solidarity with the suffering savior
1st Reading Is. 50:4-7 Attentive servant of God listens to God’s promptings!
2nd Reading Phil 2:6-11 Jesus emptied himself of his divine powers so that as a man among men he could raise men up to God.
Gospel Mt:26: 14, - 27::66  Passion narrative according to Mathew.
In our lives we hear people using this word often. What do people mean by the word?
Passion in religious sense is extreme physical pain.
Here sufferings of Jesus as a human being.
Passion is also used has a negative meaning i.e., temptation against the flesh.
Why does church use the passion of our Lord Jesus? Here the word is use in the positive sense of suffering.
The extreme physical pain used through a descriptive narration by St. Luke.
Usually the popular knowledge of many is that Luke was a physician.
He could understand the extreme pain Jesus.
The suffering during the whole journey between the garden of olives to the mount Calvary the whole episode is picturesquely depicted in detail by the author.
Of course on Palm Sunday people in the church are more worried about the long ceremony.
The reading of the passion is very long.
It is not easy for us to be used to the long reading and concentrate and remain alert.
One has to be extremely interested in spiritual growth of oneself only then can one profit from the whole reading.
If we are not motivated to spiritual excellence, the whole celebration becomes an agony to us that becomes our passion.
This year I invite all you to go through this meditation to accompany me to the Sunday Eucharist so that we participate in the whole Palm Sunday liturgy with devotion and complete concentration. This will enable us to appreciate the suffering and death of Jesus which has allowed us to experience his grace.
He has chosen each one of us as his disciples and so we can be happy of God’s invitation to each one of us.
Jesus as a human being had all the feelings of a human being.
The whole passion narration reveals this aspect of Jesus.
When he goes to the upper room he participates with his disciples the last meal.
The feeling of a farewell is uppermost in his mind.
Disciples are insensitive to his suffering.
Some of them even fall asleep while he requests their prayer.
All the feelings of a suffering human Jesus are revealed and recounted descriptively by the author.
Let us attentively go through the whole episode and try to experience that pain so that our love for the master becomes authentic and real.
In union with the divine word,

5th Sunday in Lent Year I Theme: Living in Risen Jesus 06-04-2014
1st Reading Ez:37:12b-14 Life giving Spirit
2nd Reading Rom 8:8-11 Risen Jesus gives us life.
Gospel John 11:1-45 Lazarus is raised to Life.
Is it possible to draw a picture of death?
Often death, danger is pictured by a skeleton.
Sin is a condition for death to have entered this world.
Jesus restores life to people in sin when they seek forgiveness of sin.
Jesus shouted “My God My God why have you forsaken me????”
Therefore in our life sin is a reality.
Once we know we have sinned we have to avoid sin by confessing.
Sin is a worst than cancer in our society where we live.
If we enumerate the sins they are many.
Mortal sins are to be avoided.
It could be done away with only by Jesus compassionate love.
Life consists of many types of friendships.
Today we try to meditate on Jesus friendship.
Jesus did have some people whom he loved.
Jesus spent time with them most of his public life for 3 years.
He ate meal, spend some hours with them.
Lazarus was one of such friends.
His two sisters must have been his real well wishers.
They even are bold enough to seek Jesus’ company, when they found Lazarus ill.
They even sent word to Jesus to come and heal him.
Jesus did not immediately respond to their call to his their brother.
He told his disciples that, Lazarus was sleeping.
He tries to foretell that he is the Lord of life and death.
He is powerful enough to raise even a dead person to life.
Isn’t it a fact that all of us love our life?
To save it we will go to any extent.
We try to extend our life by exercise, good food, health check etc.
It is said a poor man walks two miles to earn his bread.
While a rich man walks two miles to digest his bread.
Interesting comparison of two types of people isn’t it??????
What can we say of our life?
How can we say we have lived a worthwhile life?????
Can we say when the time for resurrection arrives, could our next life be a joyful event?????
Can we expect to be on the right of the just Judge or left of HIM?????
It may be we may say like Martha, we are full of stinking sins.
When Jesus arrives and asks to show him our grave.
What type of smell is it?
Smell of a sinful condition, because when Jesus arrives, sin disappears and life arrives.
We take life for granted.
We do not appreciate the life we have as long as we are not ill.
Then we run around to restore it to its health.
Spiritual illness is sin.
Sin destroys our state of goodness.
It is our duty during the Lenten season to restore this goodness.
The letter to the Romans is also showing how sin becomes an evil which has to be put to death and buried forever.
Jesus has proved the value of life.
He even wept when Martha and Mary were distorting at the death of his friend.
He shows his solidarity with his friends.
And this eventually leads him to restore Lazarus back to life.
What a miracle of love??????
This can happen to each one of us.
Jesus weeps when we remain in sin.
Let us be united with our master and enjoy our life in the Spirit
Yours ever in the divine word,
Fr. Juze Vas svd

SEEING IS BELIEVING 4TH SUNDAY IN LENT 2014

4th Sunday in Lent Year I Theme: Seeing is believing. 30-4-2014 1st Reading 1 Sam 16:1b,6-7, 10-13b choice falls on David. 2nd Reading Eph 5:8-14 living in light Gospel John 9:1-41 Vision to man born blind. In our lives we go about our daily living is so ordinary. We wake up. Sleep Do most of our activities often very spontaneously. Once we begin to be aware of our activities our life becomes more meaningful. We tend to see things around us. Today we are reminded of our sight. Its meaning Significance and use. We have read about many miracles in the bible. Some were performed by earnest request from the person who was either lame, deaf, leper, sick, suffering. Some times the miracle is performed by the prayers of the parents, friends, neighbours. In today’s Gospel it is the curiosity of the disciples. They attribute the blindness to the man sitting and begging to the sin committed by him or his parents. Jesus corrects them saying it is because God wants the greatness of Jesus to be proved by the miracle of giving sight to this poor blind. Jesus uses the same clay which is used to create a person in the bible. Clay was used to create us. Here clay is used to bring sight to the blind man. Jesus asks him to go and wash in the pool of Siloam. We have heard three readings. First from Old Testament, where David is chosen even though Jesse father of David wanted his other sons to be leaders. Eventually David who was in the field tending sheep is chosen as a king and anointed. We may not even think we are worthy of any reward by God. Who am I Lord say we often when it comes to serving him as a leader in the ecclesiastical community. We try to escape all responsibility. We sit at the back of the church. Hide our identity as no body. When volunteers are called for, we try to escape saying I do not have time, am not qualified. But today we have seen Jesus taking the initiative to bring vision to a blind man. Jesus takes the initiative and rewards the begging blind man. The disciples are confused thinking probably the boys parents were sinners that is why this man is born blind Jesus rectifies their view by saying this blindness is a reason for their mind to be enlightened to see. People are not sure, because though they have been noticing him every day. Today he looks totally changed, how could this be the blind man. He is not begging. He is rejoicing. What a reward for his being patient. Jesus searches the patient for his/her patience. We have to be always in the light as Paul says in the second reading to the Ephasians. How we were sinners. By God’s choice of us as his people we have received the spirit of light to be witnesses of God’s wonderful light We cannot hide this light behind any shield. It has to shine forth. Lent is a time when we can earnestly beg God to be healing our spiritual blindness to be able to shine forth in the dark corners of this secular world. Where people have no time for God, am I able to make time for God????? They are busy with noise and cacophony, do I allow myself be aware in the midst of noise and cacophony????? We have to be people who can show forth God’s wonder in our lives. This Sunday we are given a vision for spiritual wisdom. Our vision has to be brightened. Shall we attempt to be used and applied the soil of our faith to be used to brighten our faith? Only Jesus is bale to apply this to our eyes. Even on a Sunday we are supposed to be ready for this miracle. In union with the divine word, Fr. Juze Vas svd
