4th Sunday in Lent Year I Theme: Seeing is believing. 30-4-2014
1st Reading 1 Sam 16:1b,6-7, 10-13b choice falls on David.
2nd Reading Eph 5:8-14 living in light
Gospel John 9:1-41 Vision to man born blind.
In our lives we go about our daily living is so ordinary.
We wake up.
Sleep
Do most of our activities often very spontaneously.
Once we begin to be aware of our activities our life becomes more meaningful.
We tend to see things around us.
Today we are reminded of our sight.
Its meaning
Significance and use.
We have read about many miracles in the bible.
Some were performed by earnest request from the person who was either lame, deaf, leper, sick, suffering.
Some times the miracle is performed by the prayers of the parents, friends, neighbours.
In today’s Gospel it is the curiosity of the disciples.
They attribute the blindness to the man sitting and begging to the sin committed by him or his parents.
Jesus corrects them saying it is because God wants the greatness of Jesus to be proved by the miracle of giving sight to this poor blind.
Jesus uses the same clay which is used to create a person in the bible.
Clay was used to create us.
Here clay is used to bring sight to the blind man.
Jesus asks him to go and wash in the pool of Siloam.
We have heard three readings.
First from Old Testament, where David is chosen even though Jesse father of David wanted his other sons to be leaders.
Eventually David who was in the field tending sheep is chosen as a king and anointed.
We may not even think we are worthy of any reward by God.
Who am I Lord say we often when it comes to serving him as a leader in the ecclesiastical community.
We try to escape all responsibility.
We sit at the back of the church.
Hide our identity as no body.
When volunteers are called for, we try to escape saying I do not have time, am not qualified.
But today we have seen Jesus taking the initiative to bring vision to a blind man.
Jesus takes the initiative and rewards the begging blind man.
The disciples are confused thinking probably the boys parents were sinners that is why this man is born blind
Jesus rectifies their view by saying this blindness is a reason for their mind to be enlightened to see.
People are not sure, because though they have been noticing him every day.
Today he looks totally changed, how could this be the blind man.
He is not begging. He is rejoicing.
What a reward for his being patient.
Jesus searches the patient for his/her patience.
We have to be always in the light as Paul says in the second reading to the Ephasians.
How we were sinners.
By God’s choice of us as his people we have received the spirit of light to be witnesses of God’s wonderful light
We cannot hide this light behind any shield.
It has to shine forth.
Lent is a time when we can earnestly beg God to be healing our spiritual blindness to be able to shine forth in the dark corners of this secular world.
Where people have no time for God, am I able to make time for God?????
They are busy with noise and cacophony, do I allow myself be aware in the midst of noise and cacophony?????
We have to be people who can show forth God’s wonder in our lives.
This Sunday we are given a vision for spiritual wisdom.
Our vision has to be brightened.
Shall we attempt to be used and applied the soil of our faith to be used to brighten our faith?
Only Jesus is bale to apply this to our eyes.
Even on a Sunday we are supposed to be ready for this miracle.

1st Reading Ex 17:3-7 People’s cry for water in the desert
2nd Reading Rom 5:1-2, 5-8 God has saved us because of Jesus His son.
Gospel : John 4:5-42 Living Water
It is said in the living being what ever it be there is more water than any other material.
So we see the importance of water in the life be it natural or supernatural.
We see the three fourth of the earth is full of water and the rest is solid.
So when we reflect today on the essence of this element in life we have something to learn.
Can we live even one day with out any liquid?
No certainly not.
When we are tired we first want some liquid first then the solid things.
It is said if there is going to be a third world war it will not be for petrol or any other liquid but for water.
We see how the earth is heading towards global warming.
All are talking about it but no one is really interested to solve the issue.
Bible is full of expression of water being life giving:
1. Ezekiel 47:1 spring in the temple: God himself is the life giver.
2. Zecharriah 14:8 living water will spring from Jerusalem.
3. John is full of the symbol of Water: a. Cana changing water into wine John 2:7
b. Healing water pool of Betzatha Jn 5:7
c. Water which heals the eyes of a blind man in Siloam after washing. John 9:7
d. Jesus announces stream of water flowing from his side. 7:38
e. we have to be born again in the living water and spirit Jesus message to Nichodemus. 2:5
f. Water flows from Jesus pierced side.
We know how Jesus is very tired. As we saw in the first reading from the Exodus.
The people who were willing to sacrifice everything when they were thirsty they were even going to stone Moses who had brought them out of bondage.
Now in the Gospel we see Jesus totally exhausted.
Sits at the parapet of the well.
A strange place to rest.
He is a man.
There are women who come to draw water.
He is hindering them from doing their duty????
He breaks the rule of speaking to a woman in the public
Asking her to give him a drink.
He is not really thirsty in the natural sense of ordinary water.
He is thirsty for souls.
He sees an opportunity to give his teaching here.
He strikes a conversation.
She is surprised. When Jesus says though he has sought her for a drink of water.
He has better water.
She is surprised he has no pot, rope and any other means and how does he give this water.
She is interested.
The whole conversation leads to sacrament of reconciliation.
And eventually conversion.
She not only become a disciple but a missionary.
She runs home and announces the message of love she has received.
Grace is such when obtained cannot be hidden.
It goes out and shares.
We come for mass.
We participate in the Eucharist.
This gives us living grace.
Shall we just be idle?
On lookers?
No we will be authentic participators and witness of a transforming grace.

I Reading Genesis 12:1-4 Abraham is chosen & sent.
II Reading II Timothy 1:8-10 Timothy is gifted with the Spirit of Power, to witness his faith, boldly.
Gospel Mathew 17:1-9 Peter, John & James, fortified by a vision.
Mountain in life has a very great significance in our life.
Mountains are experiences of divine.
Moses met the Living God on Mount Sinai.
He secured the tablets of, Ten Commandments on the mountain.
Many of the Prophets have had their visions on a mountain.
And today Jesus is choosing this great simile of Mountain to reveal his glory.
Jesus is crucified on a mountain between two thieves.
Eventually he ascends to the Father in Heaven from a mountain
We have had many peak experiences of God’s love.
We have sought from people who have had this experience to be mediators of this to us.
We go to church to pray.
Attend Eucharist; participate in it, to be empowered to live our daily lives.
Does it give us the peak experience, we require? of which Paul is asking his disciple Timothy to be bold?
Can we say we are bold enough to be authentic witnesses?
We write testimonies after a Charismatic retreat saying we have experienced the living power of God.
Is it only an emotional knowledge?
When difficulties come we are timid.
We are harassed by the fundamentalists every day, what do we do, see to be compromised.
See what happened to Peter, James John they were so much impressed by the vision?
Peter was even bold enough to tell Jesus he would prefer to live there.
But when he descended the mountain he and his companions, forgot, began to expect to be empowered as ministers in the kingdom of God.
When suffering came to Jesus they abandoned him.
But the real power came to them in the upper room.
The upper room in our lives too is essential.
Where is our upper room or mountain where we can experience the divine?
So that we are empowered and be able to live our calling in an authentic way.
This requires to be understood the grace of God.
We have to keep our eyes open to be able to discern the living power of God.
Only then will be able to experience the love of God.
Can we, see the living Jesus in the eyes of powerless, downtrodden, sick and the suffering, in the lives of prisoners, in the lives of suffering masses, in the difficulties of tragedies.
That is why often we see the divine in total abandonment.
These could be the peak experiences which will enhance our faith to live our daily calling meaningfully.
