BAPTISM OF OUR LORD JESUS 2014

Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ 2014 Theme: Father Empowers Son as His Missionary! 1st Reading Isaiah 42:1-4 6-7 character of a faithful servant! 2nd Reading Acts 10:34-38 Jesus the messenger of God! Gospel 3:15-16, 21-22 Jesus commissioned by the Spirit! Baptism is the sacrament of empowerment through the water in the word! Through Baptism one is freed of sin. One is made to be reborn as son/daughter of God. We are incorporated into the body of Christ the church. We become shares of his mission. Today when the whole church celebrates the baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are reminded to renew our own baptismal promises.. So it is right to reflect on our own character of baptism. Though Jesus did not require this, he went through this rite in Jordan. Often our character as Christians is never seen in public. We live our lives very quietly and silently. We probably will never be proclaimed as saints in the universal church. But surely our lives will leave a mark on the history of our family. So let us see what today’s three readings tell us? First one tells us how the chosen one of the Lord is endowed with the power of the spirit of God! This empowerment is to bring Justice, peace and light! Haven’t we been waiting for centuries for these two realities to take effect in our lives???? Have we achieved it? How many political statements are made, UNO is established? Have the wars become less, conflicts been resolved? Jesus has surely wrought the works of Justice and Peace. Because he was the Son of Justice, Prince of Peace!!! By going to death the has achieved the purpose for which he came into this world. Now it is up to us to live this and appropriate it into our own lives. We might have to fight for justice, even lay down our lives, it may be painful. How shall we do this by living our Christian call? Dynamically! Actively!!!! In the 2nd reading we hear Peter encouraging the early Christians to accept the sufferings for the grater glory of God! An invitation not easily understood, unless and until we become empowered by God’s spirit which permits us to discern the will of God!!! In the Gospel we find Jesus going through the rudiments of baptismal rite! Though John the Baptist recognizes Jesus. He almost withdraws the action but Jesus requests him to do it as it is a requirement by God to allow him to continue his mission!!! What a humble act???? He voluntarily chose to step into the river Jordan. We see so many our Hindu countrymen stepping into Ganga river, to have their sins washed away!! Often this may be just a superstitious action! But the belief which goes with this may help one to be rid of the evil in the person!!!! For us an immersion in water never takes place, we were baptized as little children. We might never have known this but now as grown up people. We have an opportunity in the baptism of Jesus to see what was done to us long a go. Our baptism has to become more than our countrymen stepping into the waters of Ganges!!!! We can renew our baptismal promises. We can actively renew the promise made at baptism!! Shall we pause for a moment and do so very consciously?????? Silently, personally?????? Your may use your own formulae!!!!! One lesson we can learn from today’s liturgy. Jesus came into this world as a suffering servant and for us his disciples this is the lot. Suffering service is our gift given to us? Shall we accept this willingly???? We are attending this Eucharist as parents, as children, as religious, as people called to serve!!!! How do we live our call????? We as Christians can make this created world a little better place to live. How? By becoming conscious of the nature. We are all invited to be servants of God who has created this universe!!! Epiphany of the Lord 2014

Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ: 2014 05-01-14 Theme: Light dispels Darkness 1st reading Is. 60:1-6 God’s light in Jesus will gather all nations. 2nd Reading Eph. 3:2-3 5-6 We are promised to be light of nations. GospelMt:2:1-12 Non believers respond to the invitation to worship, the Lord through the star. For us Christians the sign of the visibility of God’s plan is Epiphany. God appears to us in his son. We have accepted his invitation to be his followers. On our pilgrimage to follow him there are various hurdles. Though the three wise men who came from the East reached the expected Lord and King but still their idea of a king was in the palace of a King. When they enquire about this the king is perplexed. Though he is familiar about this prophesy he is not ready to receive him. He wants to do away with this unexpected usurper of the kingdom. He would be jobless. So he wants to secretly find from the wise men the whereabouts of the king. He invites them and seeks their cooperation to find the King of the Jews. They promise to return when they have found him. Eventually they find the star that led them to the king. They happily worship the Lord and king and offer him their humble offering of Gold, myrrh and frankincense. In our attempt to find the Lord in our pilgrimage we find many Herods on the way. Who will secretly seek our cooperation to find the Lord. Rather than discerning the right path we fall prey to the temptations of such Herods. These hurdles are blockades to our spiritual excellence. Have to become aware of these hurdles and blocks. It is because of God’s magnanimity he has chosen us to be his messengers of love. We have to respond to his invitation to be these good ambassadors. Let this Epiphany bring the needed grace to devote our lives to be light to people who wallow in darkness. We have begun a new year 2011 in our lives. Mary mother of Peace bless all of us for 2014

Mary Mother of God 01-01-14 The world day of Peace Our Spiritual Pilgrimage in Mary!!!!! 1st Reading Numbers 6:22-27 Blessing with God’s Name! 2nd Reading Galatians 4:4-7 Jesus coming in to this world has enabled us to be daughters/sons of God! Gospel Luke 2:16-21 Naming of Jesus! What a joy for all of us to see another year, a year called 2014, a year of immense possibilities, We are able to wish each one a happy New Year.! This has become possible for all of us because God has allowed us to be called one family as chosen people. At the beginning of every year the pilgrimage of our spiritual journey begins. And it is possible in Mary our Mother and the Mother of Jesus and the Mother of the Church!!! The family which has been given a Name which means something special, it is not because of our worthiness but because of the gratuitous gift of faith!!!! A chosen people we have become. What a privilege, let us wish each other because Jesus has become our brother and Mother Mary our mother. In the first reading we see how God said to Moses that they could be special because when Aaron would bless the people placing his Name over them which would allow them to be special. This is a special choice not only for the Israelites but all the people who would be chosen in Jesus. This becomes clearer in the second reading where Saint Paul so beautifully tells the Galatians how they have been saved by Jesus love! The whole of the Gospel is a revelation of God’s wonderful love for mankind. We see the special choice of Mary to be the mother of God. Her submission to God’s will facing so many difficulties of social order. People come to know that though she is betrothed to Joseph she is showing the signs of being already with child! Once she has realized that this was because of the power of the Holy Spirit. She humbly surrenders to whatever that may be the consequence. Even Joseph who is a just man wants to put her away quietly. He too submits to God’s will. She eventually names Jesus with the name that was given by God the father himself!!!!! We see today how each one who has been granted to be the child of God. We have to constantly submit to God’s will. It is not easy for us Christians to be like Mary. When difficulties arise we always say oh we are human beings we cannot be like Mary!!!!!! But God who loves each of us when we submit to his will makes every thing easy and possible. Only one has to submit to the will of God!!! We may be placed in any place and situation, may be in factories, in offices, in administration, in government establishments, in places. it may be difficult to openly profess our faith!!!!! God grants us to submit to his will. if we are able to see it in all sorts of situation!!!! That is why there are so many movements which have been publicly testifying to God’s presence in their lives!!!! Have we the courage to accept this challenge and understand what Jesus told his disciples when he was departing to his Father “ I am with you even to the ends of time” When we wish each other a happy new year shall we remember the year 2014 will bring us many possibilitie. this will be a better year for all of us with lots of hope because God has permitted us to see this new year. This already is a special invitation for all of us to be one with Him. Thus when we are invited by the universal church through our holy Father the Pope to be instruments of Peace!! How shall we be the sign and symbol of peace? By our own lives as testimonies of God’s presence like Mary!!!! Whenever we attend the Eucharistic celebration, at the end of each celebration there is a blessing where the priest or the celebrant blesses the whole assembly. This allows us to be possessed of the power of Almighty God!! What a privilege that we are carrying in us God!!
