Baptism of Our lord Jesus Christ 2015
Baptism of our
Lord Jesus Christ
Theme: Jesus
Empowered as Father’s Missionary!
1st
Reading Isaiah 42:1-4 6-7 character of a faithful servant!
2nd
Reading Acts 10:34-38 Jesus the messenger of God!
Gospelmk 1:7-11 commissioning of Jesus by the Spirit!
Baptism is the
sacrament of regeneration through the water in the word!
Through Baptism
one is freed of sin and is made to be reborn as son/daughter of God. We are
incorporated into the body of Christ the church and shares of his mission.
Today when the
whole church celebrates the baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ we are reminded to
renew our own baptismal promises and be able to live our call as Christians.
So it is right to
reflect on our own character of baptism.
Jesus never
required this he went through this rite in Jordan.
Often our
character as Christians is never seen in public.
We live our lives
very quietly and silently, may be we will never be proclaimed as saints in the
universal church.
But surely our
lives will leave a mark on the history of our family.
Today when we
celebrate the feast of the Baptism of our Lord Jesus, it is surely very
interesting to see what those three readings which we have just now heard in
the voice of the readers mean to us?
First one tells us
how the chosen one of the Lord is endowed with the power of the spirit of God!
This empowerment is to bring Justice, and peace! Haven’t we been waiting for
centuries for these two realities to take effect in us and around us in the
societies we live????
Have we achieved
it? How many political statements are made, UNO is established? Have the wars
become less, conflicts been resolved?
Jesus has surely
wrought the works of Justice and Peace. Because he was the Son of Justice,
Prince of Peace!!!
By doing him to
death he has achieved the purpose for which he came into this world. Now it is
up to us to live this and appropriate it into our own lives. We might have to
fight for justice, even lay down our lives, it may be painful. How shall we do
this by living our Christian call?
Dynamically!
Actively!!!!
In the 2nd
reading we hear Peter encouraging the early Christians to accept the sufferings
for the grater glory of God! An invitation not easily understood, unless and
until we become empowered by God’s spirit which permits us to discern the will
of God!!!
In the Gospel we
find Jesus going through the rudiments of baptismal rite! Though John the
Baptist recognizes Jesus and almost withdraws the action but Jesus requests him
to do it as it is a requirement by God to allow him to continue his mission!!!
What a humble act???? He voluntarily chose to step into the river Jordan.
We see so many our
Hindu countrymen stepping into Ganga river, to
have their sins washed away!!
Often this may be
just a superstitious action!
But the belief which
goes with this may help one to be rid of the evil in the person!!!!
For us an
immersion in water never takes place, we were baptized as little children, we
might never have known this but now as grown up people we have an opportunity
in the baptism of Jesus to see what was done to us long a go may become alive
and active. Our baptism has to become more than our countrymen stepping into
the waters of Ganga river!!!!
We can renew our
baptismal promises, which might never have been actively renewed!! Shall we
pause for a moment and do so very consciously?????? Silently, personally??????
Your may use your
own formulae!!!!!
One lesson we can
learn from today’s liturgy, Jesus came into this world as a suffering servant
and for us his disciples this is the lot. Suffering service is our gift given
to us? Shall we accept this willingly????
We are attending
this Eucharist as parents, as children, as religious, as people called to
serve, in our vocation the life we lead is not all bed of roses, there are many
difficulties in our life!!!! How do we live our call?????
We as Christians
can make this created world a little better place to live.
How?
By becoming
conscious of the nature that is being destroyed, by using the goods of this
world sparingly, by becoming accountable in every thing we use, light, water,
the other natural resources of this world for the grater glory of God!!!!
We are all invited
to be servants of God who has created this universe!!! We are to use it for
making the Goodness of God visible!!!!
Let us live this
reality actively!!!!
Wishing all the
believing Christians a happy Baptism day!!!

28th Sunday in Ordinary time of the Year I 12-10-2014 Unlikelyt Guest
28th Sunday in Ordinary time Year I
12-10-2014
Theme: Unlikely guests
I Reading: Is. 25:6-10 Prophet joyfully describes
the coming of Messiah
II 4:12-14, 19-20 Paul understands
Whatever God sends good or bad is for his welfare.
Gospel Mt 22:1-14 Wedding feast is filled with
all sorts of guests.
We often judge everything and anything according
to our own standards.
Today God is showing us that we have to be very
sensitive all the time to see God’s will.
Today we have to openly be sorry for the times we
have been, unjustly judgemental.
Don’t we often consider ourselves better than the
other person over there?
All were openly waiting for Messiah.
Isaiah somehow sees prophetically coming of the
messiah.
He expresses in today’s first reading the joy of
people who see the messiah in person.
He uses a description of a great feast.
The celebration has been shown to be joyous.
Every body enjoys good food, good drink, and
every one is making merry.
Isaiah likens this festive mood to the kingdom of
God.
Isn’t it not all who are endowed with the gift of
faith look for this?
Arrival of saviour is constantly shown to be a
joyful event.
In the second reading Paul is showing how the
Philippians are sharing his pain.
He is aware of his pain and willing to live by it
because he feels it has been given to him by God.
By accepting the pain God is going to give us
everything we need.
Isn’t this what we all are looking for?
In the Gospel we notice the marriage hall empty.
Invited guests seem to be not coming.
Many are called from outside.
All come and fill the hall.
The marriage host comes looking in the hall.
He finds some of the guest not wearing the
wedding garb.
He seems to have provided it but they were lazy
to collect and wear.
Isn’t it the case with every believer.
Though the gift of faith has been freely
provided.
How many of us appreciate and live and deepen it?
Often it remain stagnant and not moving.
Today is the time to appreciate and live it to
the full.
Yours ever in the divine word,
Fr. Juze Vas svd

27th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year I Theme: Appreciating Gifts 05-10-2014
27th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year I Theme:
Appreciating Gifts 05-10-2014
I Reading Is 5:1-7 A Song of the Vineyard
II Reading Phil 4:6-9 Last advice.
Gospel Mt.21:33-44 Parable of the wicked tenants.
Isaiah writes in the eighth century BC. He writes how a
person creates something for his own use.
When this creation become non productive, he looses
heart and wishes to abandon it.
Here the prophet wisely compares the Israelites to the
vineyard.
They were unfaithful to the invitation of their creator.
He sends many prophets.
He reprimands them to return.
They ignore his invitation.
He leaves them to be invaded.
Subjugated and enslaved.
The prophet uses a beautiful example to bring home a
reality which is so real in today’s world.
A similar theme runs through the teaching of Jesus.
The whole of New Testament teaching was to bring about
transformation in the lives of the Jews.
When the invitation came they could not comprehend it.
They were headstrong.
They never appreciated Jesus invitation to repentance
and reconciliation.
They began to demand signs and wonders to prove his
identity.
How often we create so many hurdles in our way to
deepening of our faith.
Do we perform acts of our faith out of compulsion or
out of conviction.
Will our actions reveal the depth of our faith?
Often our performance of living the values of
commandments are coming out of guilt, superstition, and fulfilling of duty.
Do I attend Eucharist out of love for the Lord who has
saved me????
Do I serve the poor out of love Jesus had shown to the
weakest, sinful, outcaste and the downtrodden?
Often my performance is out of some ulterior motive of
going to heaven.
My aim has to be love of God and love of Neighbor was
not that wish of Jesus who came to save me????
St. Paul was a good preacher.
His teaching brought hope in the minds of the people.
Today his address to the Philippians is a testimony of
his experience as a believer.
He rejoiced as soon as he found the true faith.
He is inviting the Christians to the always joyful.
Joyfulness is a trademark of all Christians.
Paul is forthright is telling us the splendor of our
vocation as chosen and saved by Jesus.
We must appreciate the gift given to us as chosen race.
Or else we might be left out like the Israelites?
How can we ever be morose and sad?
Though we may have many trials and tribulations, the
only advice to all of us by Paul is to be always joyful.
He advices us not to worry about ourselves.
We have to depend on God’s love for us.
This is due because he has created us in his own image.
In union with the divine word,
Fr .Juze Vas svd
